2013 Annual Meeting Recap

After ALI President Roberta Cooper Ramo gaveled the Meeting to order, members heard reports from ALI's officers and voted to elect a cadre of new Council members. Getting down to work, substantive discussions were held on ongoing projects. The first day ended with a reception at the Corcoran Art Gallery, where members reconnected amid the lovely ambience of live piano music, fine American art spanning several centuries, cocktails, and sumptuous hors d'oeuvres. A speech by Merck President and CEO Kenneth Frazier at the Annual Dinner capped a day that began with remarks from a Supreme Court justice and included a gift of more than $110,000 from the Life Members in the Class of 1988. Along the way, members also participated in a series of substantive discussions on projects such as Model Penal Code: Sexual Assault and Related Offenses. Read More


The presentation of the Friendly Medal to Judge William H. Webster, a longtime ALI Council member, with an introduction by former Friendly clerk and now DC District Court Chief Judge Merrick B. Garland was the centerpiece of a day that included discussions of new projects on American Indian law and Intentional Torts to Persons. Read More

Pre-Meeting (Sunday)

Even before the Meeting was officially gaveled into order, events had begun on Sunday night with a pair of dinners. At the Ritz-Carlton, the ALI Council gathered to mark the passing of a few torches as several longtime members took emeritus status, creating openings for new Council members. A few blocks away at the Smith & Wollensky steakhouse, the 2013 class of new members were gathering to break bread together on the eve of their first ALI meeting. And earlier on Sunday, ALI joined forces with ALI CLE to hold a trio of impressive education programs on Election Law, Judicial Ethics, and Media Ethics. Read More
